Buying a cell phone can be almost as complicated as buying a computer.  Not surprisingly so, since today's cell phones are much more than just cordless receivers-in fact, some of them are very much like full computers.

There are a variety of cellular phones to choose from and each provider has its own advantages.  Palm produces both cellular phones and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) and oftentimes incorporates features of both markets into one product.  Therefore the Palm Treo is a phone, but also an email service, a web browser and a digital camera.  The T-Mobile Sidekick 3 offers web and email options and adds the extra feature of full voice service.   The Sony/Ericsson W600 allows users to drag and drop MP3 music from your PC to your phone.  The Motorola Q offers MP3 and streaming media support with Windows and Windows Media Player installations.  The LG Fusic model features voice recognition and an integrated camcorder.  The Nokia N91 is capable of receiving MP3 and other sound files from a PC and of holding 3000 songs in memory.  The Motorola Razr is such a popular and innovative product with its high tech design (including 2 cameras and 262, 000 colors) that it has spawned copycat phones and provoked other phone companies to call their own product a Razr killer. 

Smart Phone

Smart phones are just that-very smart.  They integrate the functionality of a PDA with a regular phone.  Sometimes this is done using an actual phone; sometimes phone features and wireless technology are added to a PDA device.  The best feature of a Smart Phone is that additional software can be installed into the already working system (just like a PC). 

Plans

Of course cellular phones or smart phones are only as handy as their service provider allows them to be.  Sprint, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, and Cingular each provide a whole host of plans for on-the-go customers in America and Canada.  Some cell phones without plans are sold, allowing the customer to postpone choosing a service until a later time.

Cell Phone Safety

Cell phone safety has always been an issue, beyond just a stolen Sidekick or Razr.  Controversy has erupted throughout the years over cell phones in school, cell phones and driving, cell phones for soldiers and whether or not cell phones can cause tumors. 

Regardless of some negative attention, cell phone reviews have been mostly positive. The market for high tech cellular phones is growing and the products are even starting to compete with MP3 players and portable PCs.  Buying a phone might be a complicated matter, but at least the little gadget will make your life easier.
