Pocket PC Vs. PDA
A comparison between two brands of popular pocket PCs, namely the iPAQ hx 2000 Series and the Dell Axim X51v could only be made by an authority on the subject—yes, Pocket PC Magazine. Of course Palm systems (sometimes generalized as a PDA) were left out of the competition because they are not technically Pocket PCs. Pocket PCs are handheld devices that adhere to Microsoft’s hardware specifications— and more importantly, accommodate Microsoft’s Windows operating systems, like Windows CE Pocket PC 2003 and Windows Mobile. The iPAQ Vs. The Dell Axim In comparing the iPAQ and Dell models here is what Pocket PC magazine found. In terms of price, the iPAQ models varied, with the hx model selling for $349.00 and the higher model at $599.00. The Dell X51 was a flat $499.00, a significant difference than the iPAQ. Both the hx and X51 ran a PXA270 processor, which measures up to 624 MHz. (The hx 2400 and 2100 line however only reached 520 mhz and 312 mhz respectively) Both systems had 64 megs or RAM, though the X51 had slightly higher flash ROM memory. The X51 had a larger screen (3.5 inches compared to 3.7) with a higher pixel rate, 240 x 320, compared to 480 x 640 In many other respects the devices were similar. Both had expansion slots, both had Bluetooth technology capabilities and access to Wi-Fi for pocket PC phone features. The 2190 line of iPAQ’s lacked Wi-Fi connectivity, however. The X51 had much more free software installed than the hx including several games, Pocket PC programs and pocket PC themes . In deciding between iPAQ and Dell for the best deal in handled portable computers, it appears iPAQ hx line has the edge in price and different features. Comparing PDA Software However when you throw in other types of PDAs, including Palm products, the decision becomes more difficult. Palm produces a line of handheld devices such as the Z22, T/X and E2 models. With the exception of the low-end and low priced Z22, these items boast similar hardware specifications as the Pocket PCs. They are also priced from $199.99 to $299.99, much less than the Dell and iPAQ models. Furthermore, many users prefer using the PALM operating system (or a Linux alternative) instead of Windows Mobile. Some forms of PDA phone software, PDA games, PDA GPSPDA cases and other programs are known as freeware, meaning they can be downloaded from the Internet, or transferred to the PDA from another computer. There are many advantages and disadvantages to consider when comparing handheld devices. Make sure to read the specifications and compare prices before you get out the checkbook. |
